I think they asked that question to see if you felt prevented from spending money, i.e. revenue for them.  Am glad you mentioned they lost money as you felt compelled to leave early.  Again, it's all about revenue.

Now why in the bloody bleepity bleepity bleep does it matter if I made a purchase?! This was my response.
Yes, I did make a purchase of several items. I planned on purchasing more, but upon being publicly berated, I immediately checked out and did not buy more. Not only did you lose money, but I lost as well as there were more items on sale that I wished to purchase. My husband has also cancelled his Sears card because of the lack of response.

I will keep you posted if there are more updates.
