Hi,
my suspicion is to why it is advertised in the mainstream is that it is actually not specific to blindness but can be experienced by anyone. Those who are blind are more targeted because your odds of having it are higher than the general population, but it is in no way specific to the blind. It is a recognized diagnosis by the American Psychiatric Association for anyone.
Happy Monday all!
Chris

Subject: Re: [Blindtlk] non 24

I have met some blind people who have a sleep disorder, so their bodies sometimes feel tired during the day, and too awake at night.
But of course they know when to work and when to go to bed, it's just that their bodies might not cooperate so they don't feel sleepy at the right times.
I suspect that this disorder only affects a minority of blind people, however. I myself have never had sleep problems of this kind.
I agree with your annoyance about the hype around this new non-24 drug, which to my understanding is simply a slightly different form of melatonin-a supplement that's already been commercially available for a while.
Given that there are so few totally blind people in this country and not all totals have the sleep problems, it seems like the marketing for this drug should focus on blindness consumer groups rather than filling up the mainstream media with more unnecessary blindness stereotyping.

Best,
Arielle
