[Blindtlk] Good afternoon everyone, Re: A Horrible Experience at Kmart

Hello again everyone,

There is a name for this phenomenon called "Cacooning."It's the
belief that one can only survive by isolating themselves from all direct
contact with the outside world. It has been the subject of television shows
and even some rock songs feature characters who engage in this behavior. A
few examples that come to mind are Simon and Garfuncle's "I am a Rock", The
beatles song "The Fool on the Hill" and "No Where Man", Hellen Reddy's,
"Angie Baby",and others. And guess what. To the best of my knowledge all of
the persons featured in these documentaries, songs and other literature
about those who that practice cacooning are sighted. They have chosen this
lifestyle for various reasons.

So it is for the blind. The degree to which we engage the rest of
the World via direct contact with individuals in a store or indirectly via
an online shopping portal varies according to individual preferences. We
ourselves shop for groceries and other items in-store when the need arises.
Otherwise we do our shopping and other business transactions online. We even
pay our rent that way too a chore that once required us to pay a $30 cab
fare on top of the monthly rent and utility payments. Let's not forget about
the possibility of vbeing robbed for having large amounts of cash on your
person. The Internet has reduced that bill from $30 to $2.50 for the
transaction processing fee allowing us to spend the money we would have
spent for the cab fare on other things and eliminated the risk of suffering
physical harm at the hands of thieves.

Over the next few months we'll look for other opportunities to keep
costs down to allow us and other team members to board a Greyhound Bus on
April 20, 2016 to travel to Greensboro North Carolina to spend a weekend
with some of the richest people in America. We did the same thing last fall
and had a wonderful time traveling to Cincinnati and back to bring an old
tradition back to life after many years of it being in moth balls. While I
won't call us total cacooners we believe in making sensible choices, and
spending our time and money wisely.

Peter Donahue

Afternoon, list family,

Does anybody else believe as I do, that traveling ought to be done
communally? for some it enbodies a very social nature of moving from one
place to another? At 05:40 PM 1/26/2016, Robin via blindtlk wrote:
