I remember the school district gave me a portable typewriter on loan to use
in highschool, but I had an itinerant teacher, so I didn't really use it to
type homework or anything. I actually used it to type letters on. Pam.

Thank you! You are kind! Thank goodness for my medical spell checker. Lol!
We used mainly royal typewriters at the school for the blind. I remember my
mom found me an old Royal typewriter which served me well through college.
I also remember typing research papers in high school and college. What a
drag! Had to actually count your lines on the page to leave enough space
for the footnotes. Very difficult. College students have it made now with
computers.

I have indeed observed you typing, and you are very fast. You kick butt. I
haven't been timed in a very long time, but I started taking typing in the
sixth grade at the school for the blind. I was using a manual Royal
typewriter and I used a manual Smith Corona in college. Yes, I remember the
IBM Selectric. I worked with one for a couple of summers.

I haven't been timed for a long time, but I do medical transcription for a
living, so I know my typing speed is quite high. I can usually outtype the
dictation of most doctors. I was taught typing at the school for the blind
I attended starting in about fourth grade, I believe. For me, it was the
one skill that got me a job, which I have been doing on and off for well
over 40 years. When I started transcription, I used an IBM Selectric
(remember those)? Things have come a long way technologically, but because
of that, the field of medical transcription is changing as doctors are doing
more and more of their own dictation with programs that "type" what they are
saying. This requires the transcription field to change from typing
straight dictation to editing the work of doctors for accuracy. I am very
glad I learned the typing skill at such an early age.

Hi,
At what age did you learn to type?
How many wpm can you type now?
I'm asking this question because I think that blind and visually impaired
individuals are learning skills at earlier ages then some who are the same
ages. I was 11-12 when I'd began typing.
According to the hr center I'd went to a few years ago, I'm able to type
46-53 wpm.
Thanks
