[BlindTlk] [BlTlk] Fw: The Meaning of Independence?

Hi Jen,

I think your definition is true, if you're talking about something like your own personal care, literacy, or housekeeping.

Otherwise, I don't believe this is ever true.

Is sighted people go to a place they've never been before, they use GPS, or get directions, just like we do.

As children, we depend on our parents. In school, we depend on instructors to train us. These same instructors, in turn, have to go back to school to further their education.

Young people depend on each other for entertainment or friends helping each other with any number of things.

If we're not careful, a high degree of so-called independence can push us away from relationships and forming friendships.

It's easier to have a conversation with someone when walking sighted guide, than using a cane, although this is a generality, and depends on the people involved and the environment.

Don'tl et your independence push you away from people, but don't let your dependence tie them down either.

That's pretty narrow. I don't know any sighted person that has that kind of independence.

I think independence means doing everything for yourself and never asking for or needing help again. Also - independence is something you work on for a while, and then you have it, and you're all set.
