Hello, I would not look at it as people don't know what length they should be. In the end, the cane length should be whatever you are comfortable with. If you don't walk very fast and if you don't need a lot of reaction time, then perhaps a shorter cane will be fine. For me, I would rather have the benefit of choice. A longer cane to accommodate my faster walking speed and allow me to have a greater reaction time can also be used in close proximity by switching from the grip method to the pencil method of holding it. This way even though the cane is long, it will not get in the way when I am traveling with a crowd or in a highly congested area.
