Hi,
ok, much of the below is completely untrue. First let me say that everyone
is entitled to and of course here encouraged to share opinions and this is
fine when they are just that, opinions.
However, much of the below, while stated as fact, is anything but.
firstly, the dreaded enemy milk.
Milk is in fact often a woman's saviour.
Before trying calcium supplements see below.
Most nutritionists will tell you that if you can use a natural source of a
given element, almost no matter what it is, over a supplement, you should do
so.
Far from being the cause of indigestion, it often eases it, indigestion is
very often the cause of the dreaded pregnancy related heart burn that many
of us experience and a glass of milk when you have heartburn will very often
ease it completely.
Now for calcium supplements.
The problem with calcium is that it is only absorbed into the body in the
presence of magnesium, this is why low fat milks are no longer touted as
necessarily a good remedy for osteoporosis, the truth is they just don't
work.
If your calcium supplement does not contain magnesium, you are being sold a
pup and in many supplements particularly so called health supplements this
is very much the case.
They just don't do what they say.
Which brings us to the studies not really actually quoted below.
The British medical journal:
http://www.bmj.com
published a study in think late 1994, but don't quote me on the year, which
showed that studies that convincingly demonstrated 1 product as being
notably superior to all others on the market were often flawed and
investigation revealed that many of these studies are not in fact
independent.
Without knowing the actual study sighted below it's impossible to say
whether this fits.
Caution: if you are allergic to or intolerant to milk, then of course a
calcium supplement is by far your best bet but expensive is not necessarily
better.
Also, beware of posts like the below that make all traditional medicine
practitioners such as doctors, nutritionist, etc, out to be this evil
conspiracy group.
In general these opinions are flawed also.
In fact the so called natural health sector is far more likely to contain
fraudulent practitioners as it is very difficult to regulate and has always
been under regulated way back to the sellers of snake oils.
Many supplements are just that, snake oil by another name, be very careful,
and read labels whenever possible to make sure that along with calcium your
supplement has a magnesium component in it.
Note: amber, you may wish to spell check or at least proof read your
messages before sending, especially when stating supposed facts, for
example, calcium, c, a, l, c, i, u, m.
For those of you having heart burn issues etc, don't give up on dairy just
yet, while the jury is definitely out on the below, there is a huge body of
evidence to suggest milk is very good for you druing and immediately after
pregnancy.
Hth.
Tammy
