When I decided to move out on my own with my son, my mom's friend, who
happens to work for social services, made a comment that social services
would be banging down my door if I went through with it. I lived with my
mom until my son was 8 months old, and I moved across the state to where
there was better transportation so I could be more independent. I was a
single mom then. So this woman, who has known me all my life, obviously
didn't think I could raise my son alone. It seemed to me that she should
have known better, since I've never been one to depend on anyone, and I had
been babysitting for years and had even taken classes in childcare. My mom
hardly ever helped me care for my son, other than providing transportation
because there wasn't any other option for me. That just goes to show the
stereotypes that exist about blind people and their capability to raise
children. It's ridiculous. Well she's eating her words now, so whatever.
