[blparent] cleaning a baby's nose

Yes, babies hate those booger suckers and you can hurt them if the thing
hits them the wrong way. I had a nurse tell me to keep sucking the snot out
no matter how much the baby cries but this just didn't feel right to me and
my pediatrician backed me up by telling me that those nasal aspirators can
irritate the membranes in the nose and make the problem worse. Even my
husband who can see had major trouble trying to do that with our son in a
safe fashion because they move their heads so quickly. Sometimes we'd hold
him together but the torture we put him through just to get a small amount
of snot out just wasn't worth it. Just try and keep your baby elevated if
possible, especially during sleeping. I elevated the mattress my son slept
on by stuffing a blanket under his crib mattress on one side and did the
same with our mattress when he started co-sleeping with us. You can also
put something secure under one side of the crib's legs to bring one side up
a little. Using a humidifier, bringing your baby in the bathroom when
you're taking a steamy shower, doing gentle massage around the ears and nose
to help draw the fluids, using a baby safe vapor bath solution and just keep
gently wiping your baby's nose with a soft and damp cloth are great ways to
help them through the sniffles. I even purchased one of those expensive
electric nasal aspirators and it still was horrible to use and my son acted
like we were trying to set his face on fire. If your baby will let you put
some simple saline or Simolison which is a natural simple saline with a few
more helpful agents in it, then that can help but a lot of times they hate
that just as much as trying to suck the snot out. I got the Simolason at a
health food store, it's safe for babies and nicer feeling than simple saline
on its own. I find that gentle massage helps the most along with keeping
the air moist in the environment. Oh, and keep away from mucus producers
like milk and cheese just for the time since that will just add to the
problem. Get that dairy another way if possible. I don't know if it
affects baby the same way through breast milk as it does when eating it
ourselves, but that's a good thing to ask a lactation specialist about.
Hope this helps.

Hi. Kahlan is teething and for the last couple of days she's been very
stuffy and has had a runny nose. We have a serringe to clean her nose, but
she hates it and is very squirmy! Chris and I are both total and are afraid
of hurting her if she squirms the wrong way. Does anyone have any
suggestions? Thanks.

good morning dialog. Either you can yawn and stretch and hit space on
the get out of bed button or tab to the snooze button. Remember if you
hit space on the cancel button, that means that you're not in your
right mind to make a decision at this current time. Cancel button.
Sorry, we can't accept this response at this time. Please boot me up
when you're really and truly awake. Good bye button.
