[blparent] Cloth Diapers Anyone?

Have been cloth diapering our kids for quite a while now.

Yes, they can be expensive to start, but it does save money in the long run.
You can figure on about $0.25 per paper diaper that is used. And the cost of
the water and laundry soap adds up to almost nothing, unlike what others
would have you believe. The extra time is really nothing either.

But there are a few different styles to choose from. I wouldn't' go buy a
big package of anything though until you have tried them out and see what
you are comfortable with.

Flat: The old style that grandma probably wore as a baby. A flat square
piece of fabric that needs folded to fit, and needs a cover over it to
prevent leaks. Needs to be pinned or snappied.

Pre-folds: flats that are already folded and stitched together that way,
with extra absorption in the middle. You might see specs like 4 8 4. this
means the middle section has 8 layers thick, while the outside sections are
only 4 layers thick. Needs pinned or snappied and used with a cover.

Fitted: Like pre-folds, but cut in more of an hour glass shape to fit baby
better, needs pinned or snappied and a cover.

Pocket: goes on like a paper diaper, has the cover and a little liner in one
piece, with a pocket in either the front or back to add a pad for extra
absorption. Usually comes with hook and loop, or snaps.

All-in-ones: Like the pocket diapers, but have the extra absorption
materials permanently stitched in.

There are some minor variations, but these are the general types.

A snappy is a device to help close the diaper and keep it on. It is like a T
with a long top that stretches form one side of the baby to the other to
hold the diaper that way, then a middle section that comes down to the
crotch area to hold the diaper in that direction.

If you want to know more let me know. And we have some that we are no longer
using, you can contact me if you wish concerning them.

Michael

Look at what type of daycare options you will be using assumming that you
use daycare.
Many will not allow you to use cloth diapers.
Since you're a dog user, I'll pass ona great tip. Poop bags are excelelnt
for disposing dirty diapers when you're out and about.
If you use the Mutt Mitt brand, they work amazingly well.

After spending 2 hours on the computer this morning recerching cloth
diapering, I am still baffeled. I get the cost savings over disposables
long turm witch is a big plus for my family situation, but ware oh ware does
a pregnant mom start? Do any of you use cloth, and what styles/brands do
you like, or should I say does your baby like?
I no it's early to be thinking about diapering but with some of the
diapering systoms out their you almost need to set up a savings plan to get
started as soon as the little one is born.
Any help would be gladly welcomed!
Tracey
