[blparent] Cloth Diapers Anyone?

Well, I wouldn't call them special, but it is good to avoid anything with
dies or perfumes added. We use Charlie's soap. It is something like $140 for
a 1000 load bucket. Unfortunately, like everything else, the price has gone
up, it use to be about $150 for a 1850 load bucket. Not sure how that
compares to prices of other laundry soaps anymore.

Folks that use cloth diapers can comment more on this, but my friends who
use cloth diapers say to never use fabric softener in the loads with the
cloth diapers because it ruins their ability to absorb urine like they
should. I think it puts a layer of chemical on the diaper that prevents it
from absorbing like it should. There are special detergents one should use
with diapers as well so that they don't get build-up on them causing them
not to work like they should.

Make sure you put fabric softener in the washer with your clothes if you are
going to hang them out to dry.

It's great that you can hang clothes out to dry on the line. I'm not
arguing, but I'm just curious about something to do with that. I've often
found line-dried clothes to be stiff and sort of unpleasant. I guess I've
gotten spoiled by the dryer. Is there anything that can be done to keep the
diapers soft when they're drying?

As for poop, I bet you'll find it doesn't bother you so much when it's your
own baby as it did doing childcare. Besides, you'll change so many diapers
by the time your child is toilet trained that you won't even think twice
about poop after a while.

Hello Michael,
Though's facts were very interesting, and are deffinit reasons why some
people would choose cloth over disposables, but for me it's simple, the all
mity dollor. Since I will be living in a house with it's own washer, and
have a back yard ware I can hang the diapers to dry by the time baby is
born, I believe the utility costs will be alot less than if I was having to
run to the local store to buy diapers every week. If we hadn't found a
house to live in by the time the baby will be born, it would have been
cheeper to do disposables because I would have had to use the comunity
laundry room, and it's around $4 per load pluss detergent. Pluss I would
have to sit rite beside the washer/drier because clothing has been stolen
before from there.
Over all I'm not looking forward to having hourly contact with poo either in
a pece of paper or cloth, so I'll just have to get over the eww factor.
smile It helps that I did alot of daycare as my first job so it's not all
foren.
I was really surprised to find out my husband to be is very supportive of
the whole cloth diapering thing, the fact I showed him the cost comparison
mite have had something to do with that, but his whole family used cloth
diapers so he mite actualy mite no more about the subject then me.
Thank you all for your help and addvise
