[blparent] People are funny

I've had to push through my own anxiety about doing things in public, and
what people might think. It's not that I didn't do it before, but now I've
got a little girl who depends on me to help her build an image of what a
family is, and what a blind mom can do. So I've had to take a deep breath,
either ignore the comments or address them, and do what I need to do anyway.
In a way, it's been easier because my daughter is very tough and outgoing.
We went to Target and bought the Dora Sing-Along Microphone with some of her
Christmas money tonight, and she turned it on and marched through the store,
singing the songs with Dora and telling everybody she saw--shoppers,
cashiers, and a janitor--why she loved her new microphone so much. I was a
lot more visible and sociable in the store than I would have been if she
hadn't jumped right in with that new toy. Mostly, people are well-meaning.
One older shopper said to me, "Well, you'll always know where she's at if
she's got that microphone with her."

kick it about all day like a football, and it will be round and full at
evening.--Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr.

V.
That's true. Thank you for putting it that way. I've always had this battle
inside of me, where I just feel like hiding. Now that I have children, who
are extremely active and mobile, I want to face the fear. Not saying I've
never faced it, I have, but there are some things that I have an absolute
fear in doing. If anyone would like to email me, I would share some of these
things. I'm embarrassed, but obviously I want help with it or I wouldn't
have brought it up. I like what you said V., you're absolutely right.

But the sighted, uneducated, do not know that. They don't say things like
this to be rude They say it because they don't know any other way besides
using their eyes.
It makes perfect sense to them, if you can't see, how can you watch?
Unfortunately, we are always going to be the educator, never having a break
from it. We can only let our defenses down in the privacy of our own home.
But when we are out in public, we must have our teacher's cap on.
We must make others understand that we can do it.

Those remarksw would annoy me, too, especially the part about pretending to
watch. In the only way you can, you are watching him.
