I think you are definitely on the right track. My husband and I had the same
problem with all three of our kids at one time or other. What finally worked
for us was to give our kids a couple of substitute words they could say
instead of stupid. We chose ridiculous for things we thought were not quite
the smartest... (Such as that ridiculous race track keeps falling apart!) We
also use it sometimes to refer to people (Elizabeth, you are acting
ridiculous!)
We also sometimes use "silly willy" or "Silly Willy Penguine." (Yeah, don't
even ask how we came up with that one! It's an extremely long story!) It
doesn't matter what word or words you choose to use. The point is having
words you would like your son to say instead of words you do not like. Also
talking to him about why you don't like those words would be good, in words
he can understand, of course. Also pointing out that just because he hears
others use those words does not mean he and your family agree with those
words and are going to use them. I hope this helps! I know there are worse
words than stupid, but I agree with you--I don't like that word. It is hard
to escape however--even on TV shows and Disney and other kid movies I hear
it.

Subject: [blparent] language use concern
Hi friends,
I am having this issue with my 4 year old preschooler very regularly and
both I and my husband have tried every technique. None of us use any bad or
wrong words around our son, however, he picked up words from my friend who
is very rough and always uses all kinds of words around little kids. He has
been saying "stupid" this "stupid that" We ignored it, corrected him, told
him this is wrong and just completely ignored and did not respond so that he
may stop using it, but nothing worked.
Any suggestions you guys have or any techniques that worked for you?
Hina.
