[blParent] BlParent Digest, Vol 243, Issue 1

Hi, Clayton,

In raising our kids, whenever well-meaning people asked if we didn't have sighted help, I told them, "I have a better idea, is very easy," and would put them to work making a notch or scratch in the plunger at the right point. They actually became excited about such a simple idea, and the way I look at it, I educated one more person, made a friend, and planted a seed.

I've had help from doctors, nurses, pharmacy personnel, and all with very positive results that would allow me to let them know there are so many common-sense ways that can be used without sight.

As a blind parent who has had to measure out liquid medications via a
syringe, I am beyond frustrated with the approach taken here. For one, we
don't need another piece of adaptive equipment to make something accessible
that the pharmaceutical companies should already be doing. For us. It is
very easy to put tactile markings into a syringe but with the correct
dosages. However, the pharmaceutical companies, who are very well aware of
what the issues are when it comes to measuring. Medications, have refused
to make this possible accessible to us as blind parents. To add insult to
injury, when I request. Pharmacies to put tactile markings into the
syringes, I am often met with. Don't you have someone who can see at home
who can do this for you? When we have. Tactile measuring devices already.
That can measure. The volume of something, it isn't that hard. To implement
those same techniques into a syringe. This is more high-tech than what is
needed and. I'm sure it will also have quite the price tag. Again, this is
something that the national federation of the Blind should be doing and if
necessary should be suing all of the pharmaceutical companies to require
this.
