New Granite Pavers Installed on Block 2

The project team peeled the cover off the latest progress on the 16th Street Mall renovation project yesterday and revealed the first pavers installed on the transitway between Larimer and Lawrence streets.

Laid by hand by skilled craftspeople, there will be more than 950,000 new pavers installed as part of the renovation. The granite paver design honors the original Navajo rug and diamondback rattlesnake pattern that has been a prominent feature of the 16th Street Mall for 40 years. Outside of the transit stops themselves, there will be a new curbless configuration that facilitates the movement of people and enables a variety of uses, including events and festivals.

A primary driver for the 16th Street renovation was the need to address the deteriorating granite paver system that was resulting in poor drainage, frequent disruptions to the transit system and maintenance costs of more than $1M annually. The new pavers have better surface friction to prevent slipping and improve pedestrian safety. The smaller size of the new granite pavers, along with a modified drainage system, and different grout and mortar materials will contribute to a longer life.

As a reminder, a sample installation of the paver system<https://cig-pr.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=fc34ba15e6547b8d998f63f6a&id=605c18fd2f&e=0e4069ae0b> remains open for public viewing at The Outer Space at 16th and Welton streets, allowing people to experience the new granite walkway and transitway that have been designed to increase safety and improve mobility along the iconic pedestrian destination.

Noise Variance Passed at Public Hearing

On Thursday, Jan. 11, PCL Construction received approval from the Denver Department of Public Health and Environment (DDPHE) for a noise variance. This approval allows specific construction activities to occur at night on 16th Street from Blake to Broadway for the duration of the project. PCL voluntarily withdrew nighttime demolition work based on the public comments received. During nighttime hours, they will not use jack hammers, concrete saws, demo saws, or back up alarms; flaggers will be used for safe conditions.

The opportunity to work at night will lessen impacts to businesses and commuters, provide a safer work zone and allow for specific activities such as tree planting to take place in the most productive environment. Night work will be planned when it makes the most sense — it will not occur every night in every block. The construction activity will dictate whether nighttime work is a good choice.

Night work could begin as soon as February 2024. If your block is going to be affected by night work, you will be notified seven days in advance. A 24-hour information line 855-816-MALL (6255) is in place on the project. It will be answered by a live person during any night work.

Renovations to Begin Between Tremont and Court Place

As soon as Monday, Jan. 29, crews and equipment will arrive on Block 11 to begin Phase 1-2 work in the block. The first thing you will see is the installation of a full-block fence from the building face of the Sheraton Hotel extending to the north side transitway curb. Fencing will move as work requires, and direct notices will be sent prior to any changes

In a select few blocks on the Mall, the project team identified an opportunity to complete the work planned for Phases 1 and 2 into a combined “Phase 1-2” on one side of the block. This approach requires a full sidewalk closure on one side of the block and is only possible on blocks that have a single business or large business complex with main access points off 16th Street.

This is beneficial to the businesses along the Mall because it expedites work in their block, specifically on the side where the combo takes place. The other side of the block will enter a normal phase 2 configuration once the phase 1-2 combo is complete.

Update: Tremont Intersection Work

As soon as Monday, Jan. 29 there will be a parking lane and single, right lane closure on Tremont Place. One through travel lane and adjacent bike lane will be maintained. On-street parking will be limited along Tremont Place between 15th and 17th streets, and travel delays are possible so please allow extra time.

Approximately, two weeks later, the intersection of Tremont Place and 16th Street will fully close. This closure is required for Mall improvement activities including utility, traffic signal and lighting infrastructure installation across the intersection. Please watch for signage with closure and detour information. The intersection closure is expected to last 4 - 6 weeks.

Here’s what you can expect:
During the intersection closure, Tremont Place will temporarily become a two-way street between 16th and 17th streets. This will require a U-turn at the 16th Street Mall intersection. However, please note Tremont Place will continue to be southbound-only between 16th and 15th streets. You can find detour information linked here<https://cig-pr.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=fc34ba15e6547b8d998f63f6a&id=e337b4ed75&e=0e4069ae0b>.

  * Business and residential access, including access to parking structures, loading docks and surface lots will be maintained. Most access points will only be right-in and right-out movements — we will communicate exceptions directly with buildings.
  * Crosswalk closures will occur throughout the intersection closure, with three of the four crosswalks open at all times.
  * A temporary traffic signal will be installed at 17th Street and Tremont Place.
  * On-street parking will be limited along Tremont Place between 15th and 17th streets.
  * Bike lane temporarily detoured to Glenarm Place between 14th and 17th streets. See detour information here<https://cig-pr.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=fc34ba15e6547b8d998f63f6a&id=a02aa67c83&e=0e4069ae0b>.
  * Cyclists who remain on Tremont Place must dismount and walk through the crosswalk.
  * The intersection will remain closed 24/7 for the duration of the work.
  * Watch for signage for closure and detour information.
  * Travel delays are possible so please allow extra time
  * All construction activities are schedule and weather-dependent and subject to change.

Update: Intersection Closure at California and 16th Streets

The intersection of California and 16th Streets will now close as soon as Feb. 5. This work is scheduled to last 4 - 6 weeks. You can find detour information linked here<https://cig-pr.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=fc34ba15e6547b8d998f63f6a&id=5b0f79233f&e=0e4069ae0b>.

Here's what you can expect: California will become a two-way street between 15th and 16th streets and between 16th and 17th streets during the intersection closure, with a U-turn required at the 16th Street Mall intersection.

  * Business and residential access, including access to parking structures, loading docks and surface lots will be maintained. Most access points will be right-in, right-out movements only — we will communicate exceptions with buildings directly.
  * Crosswalk closures will occur throughout the intersection closure, with three of the four crosswalks open at all times.
  * A temporary traffic signal will be installed at 17th and California streets.
  * On-street parking will be limited along California Street.
  * The intersection will remain closed 24/7 for the duration of the work.
  * Watch for signage for closure and detour information.
  * Travel delays are possible so please allow extra time.
