[Ct-nfb] suggestion

Thank you for the suggestion, John, but configuring it as an announce-only list would completely defeat the purpose of setting up this list. An announce-only list would bring us back to what we had before we started this list.

We set this list up so that more people than just the community outreach office employees would be able to send information to the entire membership. If used properly, this list allows members like Chris Kuell to ask everyone a question about how to use his Victor Reader Stream. Also, if one of our chapters wants to tell everyone about some cool event they're having, they can tell us. If someone is looking for a roommate for the NFB national convention, they can ask the list. These are all constructive uses of the list. Messages not relating to the NFB or to blindness should not be posted on the list. Occasional introductions are common everywhere, but how many people introduce themselves more than once?

In order for this list to succeed, we need list members to be responsible. Most other state affiliates have lists like this one, and they work just fine. I'm on the NFB of North Carolina's list, too, and they don't have any problems with the misuse of their list. They're a bigger affiliate than we are, which means they have more people than we do who are using it responsibly. We set this list up as an exact copy of the NFB of North Carolina's list.

Let's not let those Tar Heels keep showing us up!

Configure it as an announce-only list. That solves the problem.

You're absolutely right, Esther. This list is supposed to be informational,
and there is no reason for the idle chit-chat. I continue to address it
with those inconsiderate members who refuse to use the list properly.

I'm leading the horses to water, but I still haven't figured out how to make
them drink.

Take care,

Suzanne, yes, you’re right.

I thought that this email list was going to be primarily informational, but
our email boxes are being cluttered with idle chit-chat, a lot of which I,
for one, am not particularly interested in. I know that on some list
serves, there is a link at the bottom to reply to sender, and another one
for replying to the group.

Thanks, and I don’t mean to sound like an old fuddy-duddy.

Hello,

May I suggest, if possible, that you set the list for only the moderator to
post to members? This would eliminate any kind of nonsense emails and chit
chat email. A separate list could be started for anyone on the
informational list to join if they are interested in interaction and
discussion.

It seems a shame for so many to opt out because of the volume. The actual
informational emails have not been voluminous.

Setting up two lists might help to keep all parties satisfied. Just a
suggestion. Don’t’ know if it’s an option.

Suzanne
