You do not need to print and scan with Open Book, You go to print within 
Adobe's file menu  and choose Freedom printer.  the doc then pulls up in OB- 
some pdf will do this while other not but when I cannot read in Adobe, I try 
the import printer before printing and scanning.

Some of the newer JAWS versions are supposed to have better graphic reading
abilities, I.E. they can decipher words that are not previously formatted as
text. Or that's what they'll have us believe. Kurzweil and Openbook are
scanning tools, so you can print and scan, and then have readable
documents--very time consuming. If a PDF is properly formatted as text, you
should be able to read it with JAWS for Windows, and certainly other tools
like Zoomtext's doc reader. You can also quickly resave the PDF as a word
document using the Adobe file menu. JFW is the best there is for screen
reading so far as I know. Now don't I look like a computer whiz? Not I.

It could depend on which type of PDF we're using.  Some PDFs have text
formatting in them so that text can be copied and pasted out of them, while
others have text in them that is locked as a picture file only so that it is
a picture of text rather than text itself.

I use one of the weakest screen reading packages on the market, and it can
read the PDFs with the highlightable text.

Another option may be Kurzweil.

Beth, Is it too much to ask that you put all PDF files into a word format.
All you need to do, if you have a scanners do especially with multi function
printing etc. My screen reader JFW does not read PDF files. It would be so
helpful if you could place your attachments in to a Word format.
