Hello, fellow Federationists.
I’m sure you’ve seen the e-mails from Gary and the national office concerning HR 1, which is currently in the House Ways and Means committee.
Under current tax law, if you or your spouse are blind, or age sixty-five or older, and if you do not itemize your deductions on your federal tax return, the standard deduction is increased, lowering your taxable income. This is equivalent to claiming an extra exemption for yourself, or your spouse. HR 1 is a bill that makes revisions to the internal revenue code that includes eliminating this deduction.
Representative John Larson is a member of the Ways and Means Committee. If you live in his district, please contact him and let him know how important this deduction is to blind people, and urge him not to support it.
It is also important that we contact our other legislators, and let them know that an increased tax liability would be a serious financial burden to many blind people, and urge that they fight to maintain this important deduction.
Thanks for all the good work you do.
