Dear Miss Streeter,

Thank you for your message concerning the importance of education for individuals with disabilities. I appreciate hearing from you.

Individuals with disabilities should be provided with the support they need to meet their full potential. More than 35 years ago, Congress passed the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) to help states provide to all children with disabilities a free, appropriate public education.

IDEA affords eligible children unique opportunities and enables them to participate in the educational process alongside their peers. Congress set a goal of sharing 40 percent of the excess cost of serving these students. To date, Congress has failed to live up to this commitment. To remedy this situation, I was proud to cosponsor the IDEA Full Funding Act last Congress, which would require the federal government to meet this goal. Furthermore, I have co-authored a letter to the Senate Appropriations Committee urging the highest possible funding level for IDEA. As our work progresses, rest assured that I will continue to advocate for programs that increase the quality of special education.

Thank you again for your message. I will keep your views in mind. Please feel free to contact me in the future with any additional questions or concerns.

Sincerely,
