[Diabetes-talk] Voice

Hi Eileen,
I would not think it overly difficult to download the Voice from a
website... Also, the NFB might consider doing the Voice on audiocassette at
the normal speed of 1 and 7/8 IPS. It would be extremely more cost
effective to produce and anyone sighted or blind could read (listen) to the
Voice.
There may be folks while driving their vehicles to work or wherever
would be enlightened by listening to the Voice.
I suggest you send your inquiries to Dr. Marc Maurer at
OfficeOfThePresident at nfb.org.

Regards,
Ed Bryant

Why can't the voice of the Diabetic be produced in a down-loadable format
that would save on both printing & paper costs in addition to the costs for
audio dubbing/recording equipment and cassettes? If a master copy was made
available on a web site & with today's technology, both text & audio
versions could be easily down-loaded to computers. From there they could be

read with the use of screen reading software, magnification software, or
simply copied onto a CD and played on a boom box. Who doesn't own a CD
Player these days? Also with NLS moving to the digital down-loadable
talking books format blind people will be equipped with players that would
allow them to read these files.

I think there is some good & useful info that comes from the voice. It
would be a shame if a newly blinded diabetic could not get the information
they need. Doctor's certainly don't know the blindness aspect of diabetes
well. In fact, in December, I was at my Doc's and they were asking me what
the options are for talking/accessible meters!

By the way, out of noseyocity, what percentage of the NFB membership is the
diabetic population? I would think pretty high? Just guessing, but am
interested to know.

Eileen
