Actually, the other thing that hasn't been mentioned is whether or
not we can add blood to the strip. So, let's say I insert the strip,
lance my finger, do what I do until I think there's a reason to
introduce my finger to the strip. As is often the case for me, okay,
I futs around a bit and can tell there's blood there, but obviously
not enough to make the meter beep. So I back away, fuss with my
finger again and come back to the strip and try again. I often get a
successful reading this way. Granted, this happens within a short
time frame. If I had five minutes to play, I think the blood would
dry by then. But that's always the tricky bit. If the meter says not
enough, when does it do that? My Free Style meter just doesn't accept
anything but the required amount. No meter has any business beeping
at me if there isn't enough blood. Remember the old VoiceMate? It
also said not enough blood. And oh how many tests went through as
accurate that really also didn't have enough blood. I often fool the
Prodigy meter as well.
I think that if we're trying to get blood on a strip, and we get some
but not enough, after the usual two minutes, we get an error beep and
grab a different strip. With today's meters, if something happens and
we run out of time, we can always just pull the strip out, insert it
again and restart the clock. Now, if I do this with the Free Style,
and there is in fact some blood on the strip, it will give me error
beeps and I have to get another strip. And no meter, no matter how
cute will remove all of the guess work we must do.
So, I guess here's how I'd phrase my question about the Solo. Does it
beep when it first detects the presence of blood, as the LifeScan
meters do, or does it beep when it actually has enough for the test?
