Well, I guess we are all dating ourselves... hum.. word star, how about
using the punch cards and having to go to a computer that was huge in a cold
building separate from anything else? Or cobalt?? And all of those cards.
Just keeping up with that mess was a challenge in itself. LOL
Well, technology has really come a long ways. I like many of you take so
much time typing out blood sugars, insulin. I would be very interested if
there was a program that could be purchased for me to use.

Back in the late 80's, I always transferred my BG readings into this
nice table in Word Perfect. Hmmm, dating myself? Good old Dos!
Anyway, I'd show up at my appointments with this really nicely
printed out book, only to have the docs take a quick uninterested
glance at it and say something like wow, you keep nice records!
Eventually, I stopped doing it because it took up a lot of my time
and it wasn't being done for myself. So now I make them do the work. <grin.>

Oh but I do remember Word star! And you know, I can't zap erroneous
readings from my FreeStyle meter anyway. That drove me crazy on the
old One Touch meters. I lost count of the number of times I sat in a
doc's office answering questions like, so, how did you feel when you
were at 19? Hey, you idiot, look! Can't you see that there's another
reading one minute later? And when I asked LifeScan about why we
couldn't delete crazy readings which resulted from not enough blood,
their answer is that if they put that feature in, all the teen-agers
would delete bad numbers. I must admit, I wondered what made them
think all adults would be honest. <grin.>

For years my docs were always on my case about keeping records, and this
was when I was sighted. Now, my hubby created an Excel spreadsheet that
I record my sugars, insulin for meals and corrections, meals and other
activities such as exercise or when feeling sick. He created specific
formulas for the spreadsheet such as a formula calculating percentages;
like if I managed to stay under 120 75% of the time, and it's created to
show trends easier than going sugar by sugar, and it can calculate these
trends within the spreadsheet as well. Currently, I send weekly records
to my doc, and they go over them to see if any adjustments need to be
made. This system works, and my docs are grateful for the work I put
into it.
A1-C's by themselves will tell you what sugars have been running over a
three month period, but A1-C's can't track trends; like if you tend to
run low at a certain time of day, or if you run high. Issues may be
after meals or activity. Adjustments are based on these trends more so

Yeah; I heard the same thing when I proposed being able to delete individual
records to the Prodigy peple and the Solo people also. How in blazes are you
going to convey that you trust your patients if you demonstrate by action
that you don't? Drives me nuts!
Incidentally, the SensoCard Plus allowed ddeletion of individual readings.
Are the British so much more trustworthy then those in their erstwhile
colonies?
GRRR!
And in any event, so the teens *do* delete bad readings. They're only
hurting themselves and only *they* can fix the problems -- the good medical
personnel certainly cannot.

Veronica,
This is the same med staff who immediately placed me on an insulin pump
once I started seeing them eight years ago, and I was in the process of
losing my vision at the time. They also trained my husband, who is blind
too, on how to give Glucagon injections. My endocrine doc moved to OK,
but my new endocrinologist is great too, and I've been working with the
same nurse educator for the entire eight years as well. She's actually
the head nurse administrator at the Nebraska Med Center's Diabetes
Center, but she still deals personally with my stuff, which is awesome.
Yeah, I've always had this relationship since switching eight years ago
to a new clinic, and it has tremendously helped me regulate everything
as much as my own management has. We started a pre-pregnancy plan back
in Sept. so I was adjusting my rates on the pump frequently, in weekly,
sometimes twice-weekly, communication with my nurse educator, seeing
specialist after specialist, having numerous test and lab work done, all
just before even "trying." It's awesome that my docs have been so
involved in the process, wanting to ensure the best results possible for
me. I was given a total clean bill of health and the go-ahead. I'm use
to the constant communication already in general, so it hasn't been a
complete bother to maintain a constant, consistent communication sharing
my sugars and activity records, and making adjustments as necessary.
It's always been a take it or leave it situation; if I want the help,
they are ready and available, but if I don't take advantage of this
opportunity, they have no reason to work with me outside my quarterly
visits. Again, so shocking to me that docs elsewhere don't advertise
similar care. I've had a great experience with my docs, for the most
part, and they are, and always have been, sup portative of me, and
willing to put in the extra time and energy along with me.
