Joy is correct. Like lantus (glargine), Levemir (detemir) is a long-acting
insulin. As Joy found out, for some individuals, it doesn't last quite
twenty-four hours. Its purpose is to give a basal dose of insulin (a normal
pancreas puts out a bit of insulin all the time to control your blood
sugar); so that someone without insulin always will have some. It also is
used to sort of smooth out the blood sugar highs. I suspect that this is why
you're being given it. As Joy says, five units isn't very much for a basal
insulin but they probably want to start you out and build up so you won't
have an insulin reaction from too much.
Actually, although levemir can be used to supplement the insulin you're
making, the victosa which you couldn't tolerate is specifically designed to
suppress high insulin readings.
In any event, be patient and watch your carbs.

Hi Dar!
I did use Levemir for a short time. I stopped because I was not able to get
it to last 24 hours. This is not a quick acting Insulin. Rather it is a
slow acting type like Lantus, which takes 3 or 4 days to effect your blood
sugar level. Five units is not a lot of insulin, so don't worry about
getting low yet.
Remember Insulin does not cause weight gain but being in great control after
not being in control will cause you to gain weight, which is possible to
lose with more exercise.
