Hello All,
I have a question for Joyce Stigile who called Dawn Lanting in Ohio.
I have been trying to find the item you suggested through Maxiaids.
This item may have been discontinued.
They are recommended the Safe Shot which can be adjusted using presets at
100, 50, and 33 units.
A Count a Dose would be used for the 45 units.
I need some more information so I can work through this issue for Dawn.
Could you please call me at 419-661-9171.
Thank you,

Colleen Roth

Hello to those who talked to Dawn,
I am a friend of Dawn's and President of the At Large Chapter in Ohio.
I do not use Insulin although I am a Diabetic.
Until a few months ago Dawn's husband was drawing up her insulin. He has had
a serious stroke and is not able to do this any more.
I need to know if there is a specific needle which works with the Count a
Dose. I think Bernie said somethroughing about this.
I think she can use this for the 45 units she takes when she needs Fast
Acting Insulin. This is usually three times a day. Sometimes it is four
times a day.
She also takes 100 units a couple of times a day.
There is something called a Fase Shot which is preset by a Physician. It
measures 33, 50, or 100-units.
I will be helping Dawn to get this stuff forwardded to the right people to
get her equipment.
Could you please email me offlist unless you think this information will be
helpful to more people.
I do appreciate your help.
Dawn needs me to write these thing down for her.
Thank you in advance for any help,

Colleen Roth

Colleen:

The Count-a-dose that's still available uses BD (Becker and Dickinson)
50-unit syringes. The Count-a-dose that handles 100-unit syringes is no
longer available. She should work with her pharmacist to find a BD syringe
and needle combination that works with the Count-a-dose. IMO she must have a
whale of a lot of insulin resistance to take 100 units at a time several
times a day. IMO the simplest solution would be to draw up her insulin 50
units at a time, giving herself two shots each time she proposes to inject
100 units. There *is* U400 insulin; she'd only need to take 25 units of that
to equal 100 units of U100 insulin. But she would have the problem of
keeping the U100 and U400 insulins separate. It sounds like she doesn't know
Braille so that might be a problem.

I know what I say next will seem anathema to many on this list. But till she
gets things straightened out, Dawn might want to consider using a Home
Health Nurse (they're available fairly easily in my county, at least) to
draw up a bunch of 100-unit doses ahead-of-time she could keep in the
refrigerator. Just a thought.

Mike

Hi Mike,
She does have a friend doing this right now but doesn't want to do this
long-term.
I do think that this may be the solution if she doesn't want to use the Safe
Shot.
She does have severe restistance to insulin. Her a1c is really high and she
has Severe Neuropathy.
She has been blind for about seven years due to Diabetes.
She takes a lot of Insulin and her Insurance Company doesn't want to provide
the pens.
Maybe the cost of a home-health nurse to draw up the insulin would help.
I did suggest different containers for the insulin sypes which her friend
set up for her.
Thanks for the Sugesttions.
Colleen
