MICHAEL BARBER OBITUARY
Michael Barber
June 27, 1949 - March 23, 2021
Born in Des Moines, Iowa
Resided in Des Moines, Iowa
Michael David Barber, 71, returned to The House of his Lord and Savior Jesus
Christ on March 23, 2021. He was born June 27, 1949 in Des Moines, Iowa to
Alexander and Priscilla (Lawrence) Barber. He married Kimberley Ray on
September 3, 2005.
After receiving his AA from AIB, Michael began a long and rewarding career
with the Iowa Department for the Blind. He selflessly served others for
years before retiring in 2014. Michael's calm and gentle nature, his
patience and kindness toward others, and his enthusiasm to teach were traits
from which many benefited.
Retirement didn't damper Michael's need and desire to serve as he became a
board member on the National Federation of the Blind of Iowa to which he
also served as President for eight years, the Friends of the Iowa Library
for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, Consumer Advisory Committee,
Diabetes Action Division, and the Summit House HOA Board. He also
collaborated with other consumer groups, Disability Rights Iowa, National
Organization of American Council of the Blind and the National Federation of
the Blind to try to improve accessible voting for the blind. He fought these
battles up until his passing.
Michael is survived by his loving wife Kimberley, two sons Mark Allen Barber
and Matthew Alexander Barber both of Des Moines, IA; daughter Melody Anne
Barber of Kansas City, MO; step-daughter Desiree Van Polen (Steve) of
Victor, IA; grandson Leo Cassiday; step-granddaughters Emily, Natalie and
Taylor; 3 siblings Gregory Barber, Stephen Barber and Margaret Reseland all
of Des Moines, IA; sister-in-law Lisa (Larrie) Jemison of Havana, FL; Gary
(Jerron) Kerr of Donahue, IA; Diana (Wayne) Williams of Albia, IA and
several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Alexander Barber and his
wife Irene; brother Ronald Barber and his wife Cheryl; brother-in-law David
Reseland; sister-in-law Beverly Barber and father and mother-in-law Ray and
Alice Kerr.
