Lauren,
I no longer recall which heating requirements are needed with which 
thermostat units, but I do remember that it did matter what you have 
because, at least with the VIP units, one of them only worked with certain 
heating systems.  But I would expect that you are not going to know 
specifically what kind of heating system you have, because this information 
is normally not needed by tenants. So before you buy one, I would suggest 
asking your landlord what kind of heating system it is. Then you can call 
the company to see if the cheaper unit will work with that, or if you would 
need their higher end model that works with a larger number of systems. 
Also, if there is some possibility that you could move to a new apartment in 
the future, this could be another consideration for you, as just because 
your current apartment could work with the cheaper model, does not mean that 
a future apartment would.
