[Electronics-Talk] [Electronics-talk] [EXTERNAL] Re: Storable energy for prolonged periods of power outage

I know that I am coming late to this conversation, but I want to give some information as well as hopefully getting some, too.
I have several different devices for charging different electronics either portably or during a power outage. For smaller USB devices, I would recommend either a charger that is powered by AA batteries or a portable battery that can be recharged using USB. There are also hand crank chargers. If you buy one, make sure that it is compatible with the iPhone.
I also have several solar devices. I decided to get them after playing with some of those solar moving flowers. If those things pick up enough sunlight to move faster than one movement a second, then there has to be enough sunlight to produce some electricity.
No, you cannot charge solar with anything other than sunlight.
I have three Renogy fireflies, each with two additional solar panels connected in parallel; connecting the panels in series has too high amps. The Firefly is a case that opens to reveal solar panels. It has a battery and ports for ac and USB. Some of the input ports for charging it are not labeled, so you have to get some help. The solar panels are easy to put together as they have mc4 cables.
I also recently bought a miniature solar panel with two USB outputs for charging stuff like my iPhone. It does not have a battery attached to it, but that is not a problem because I have a USB battery that I charge.
The Firefly and solar panels make a fair amount of energy. The only problem is that the Firefly does not have a high enough power output to power most appliances. Does anyone know of a good, relatively cheap UPS that has 1000w output?

Nicole

I doubt it would be a generator as such.

Somebody had told me that there was some kind of a portable generator that runs on a whole bunch of d batteries, something like twelve d batterids, and that you could get it at KMart. We were talking about it after Hurricane Sandy. But when I went to my KMart to check it out, the store had been totally trashed from the hurricane. I haven't tried to find it since. Pam.

Hello. I'd like to add that there are also portable solar panels to charge your devices. I picked up one over the summer. It has several ports to plug into such as USB, mini USB, etc. it also came with a battery pack and rechargeable batteries. We picked it up at a boating store called West Marine. It is pretty cool and charges pretty fast. Great for when you're outdoors and away from an outlet to charge your device. I've charged my devices by placing the solar panel in a window, being outdoors, and even on a rainy day. There are two panels which fold in half making it the size of a sheet of paper. When charging outside or in the sun, The panels shield your device from getting too hot in the sun. If you are going to be out of power or away from power for days at a time, I highly recommend the portable solar panels. Just wanted to throw that out there.

Gadget Girl
