Hi Ashley.
I have an electric stove. It's 25 years old now, though. It's a low-end GE.
I don't mark the knobs, except the oven. The rest I just treat as a clock face. 4:00 is really hot. 7:00 or 8:00 is simmering. Then I just listen to the sound of the water to hear if it's boiling or simmering, or hold my hand over the pan to feel how hot it is.
I don't know if more modern knobs are trickier, but that's what I do with my old stove.
Tracy

Subject: [Electronics-Talk] accessible electric stoves

Hello all,

I am in search of how to make an electric stove accessible.

Stoves have flat burners now a days.

They have knobs to set the temperature on each burner but that needs to be marked for it to be usable.

Years ago, we had electric stoves with coils which could be easily seen by a low vision person and also raised so it was tactile.

I thought these tactile burners were more user friendly because you could just touch the burner when it was off and center a pot or pan on the burner.

What stoves, if any, are accessible now?

Is there a stove out there that sends messages to your smart speaker like Alexa to tell you temperature of the burners or says when food is boiling or something like that?

I attend a day program for people with cognitive disabilities

with a kitchen unit. It has an electric stove with five burners.

How can you make a stove accessible? Is there some sort of high contrast or tactile marking we can put on the stove next to the burners so I know where burners are?

What is a good method of marking the stove knobs? Years ago when I worked with a rehab teacher, she said high marks could be used.

Thanks.

Ashley
