Dear Paul,

There it was — in black and white in the Wall Street Journal.

A picture of Moses holding the tablets of the law.

It appeared on the lead page of the Markets and Finance section of the 
popular daily, with the headline: “The Ten Commandments for Wall Street 
Interns.”

Obviously, the article wasn’t promoting the Bible’s Ten Commandments, 
but the mention is an acknowledgement of the influence the Bible has on 
our culture.

And it is only one of many.


   * For example, on July 8, 1776, “a chime that changed the world” 
rang out in Philadelphia, inviting people to come and hear the first 
public reading of the Declaration of Independence. Since then, millions 
of people have passed by the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia’s National 
Historic Park.

On this iconic symbol of American independence are the words of 
Leviticus 25:10, “Proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all 
inhabitants thereof."


   * You’ve heard presidents say these words: “I do solemnly swear that 
I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, 
and will, to the best of my ability, preserve, protect, and defend the 
Constitution of the United States.”

As many of these new Commanders-in-Chief raise a right hand to take the 
oath of office at their inaugurations, they place their left hand on the Bible.


   * Beyond that, many U.S. presidents have affirmed the value of this 
great book, including Theodore Roosevelt.

Roosevelt — despite choosing not to use a Bible during his oath — 
rightly observed, “No book of any kind ever written in English has ever 
so affected the life of a people.”

So much a part of the fiber of our nation and influence on our culture, 
here and around the world, the Bible is truly an engaging book!
