I think that if you ask about activities that you are interested in, like Bible study or choir or whatever, you will make friends and the rest will follow. But if you approach churches with needs first it may have the opposite effect then what you want. I think when we come across as needy, right or wrong it turns people off. Join activities that you are interested in or where you can help and the rest will follow  It is true that we might have some unique needs, but I think we have to also tell Our Lord what is important to us, and trust Him to bring people into our lives.
