Hi Debby,
I can understand your feelings. I'm glad for you that the church you love
and attend is welcoming and you can join in as just one other member.
Your situation of integration is one we would all like I'm sure. I can also
agree that we have to help ourselves and the first thing we should not do is
ask for help. But, pretty soon to keep going to church, you are going to
need to ask for transportation unless you can keep affording expensive
paratransit or are lucky to have a bus running. That is if you live alone or
live with no drivers who can assist.
I do not know about your area, but our metro area has real limited bus
service on Sundays.
And, no I never found your messages offensive. You definitely share your
thoughts and I know they're from the heart.
So do not read on if you don't want to hear negatives on the catholic
church.
I join the rest of you in saying a word on the catholic church.
I was just in a religion class elective; I take classes off and on as I look
for work. We had to attend another type of religious service; another type
means another religion different than one we grew up in; since I am
protestant, I was approved by the professor to attend a catholic church.
So I went and dad went with me as to not be so alone in this massive church.
I found that people just leave in a hurry after service. How different than
most protestant churches where we shake hands with the minister, greet
anyone else there in the receiving line by the minister such as a family who
had a kid who was baptized, optionally join the congregation in the
fellowship hall, and say hi to others.
It is so different in the Catholic church I learned from my participant
assignment. Catholics leave after service and no one spoke to each other or
their own priest. In fact, I got a sense that the priest did not even know
his congregation, although I suppose that is typical in a large church.
I did not find the Catholicchurch too friendly. I also reached out to the
worship director. Can you believe this? Of all people, I expected a church
leader to be helpful to someone for an assignment. The director failed to
return my emails and phone calls.
I did speak to the priest, but he seemed kind of aloof. I was hoping he
would have described the church atmosphere more like the setup and
architecture when I asked him about the
sanctuary.
Ericka, I can see why you said what you said.
I'm not bashing the church to anyone who is catholic. I'm just sharing
thoughts and echoing others experiences.
Ashley

I'm really feeling a bit defensive here. I'm feeling like I should
unsubscribe, because I have to say that this has not been my experience of
the Catholic Church. I also think that if we go te any church, whatever that
church may be expecting them right away to do for us, we will be very
disappointed. Most of my time as a practicing Catholic, I was single. I did
have some conelp when I first moved to Portland, OR, but that was due to a
connection with someone from another city I'd lived in. Eventually I moved
to a different parish, and could walk to church. On reakly nasty weather
days, I did get rides. I think we do have to put forth some effort on our
own, reach out and get involved. It's not easy, especially in the beginning
but it's just how it is. Take the bus if you have to, walk if you have to,
maybe pay for a cab once or twie, and yes I know it's expensive. But when
people see that we make an effort for ourselves, they're a lot more willing
then to reach out and accept us. I think that if we act like helpless blind
folks that's how we'll be treated. I didd't like the first parish I attended
in Portland, and happened to meet someone who took me to her parish, which I
really liked. So I eventually moved to that part of Portland so that I could
go to that parish. It was a great place for me. But it didn't happen easily
or all at once. Well, ow'd best go now, I've probably offended many of you,
and I'm sorry if I have, but in all honesty I don't regret having said
anything that ow said. Blessings, Debby
