[gui-talk] opening messages in gmail with Jaws

Sherri,

I'm going to direct you where to find instructions for setting things up so
that, with a gmail account, you can go on using Outlook express, even for
the gmail account. This may not be at all what was discussed below. I've
given up for the time being trying to learn to manipulate the Google mail
interface myself, as I was trying to learn just to get a handle on it. I saw
that my pleas for help must have been poorly expressed and that I wasn't
making clear just what I was having problems doing. So this won't be related
to how to use Jaws at the Web mail interface of gmail. It will be how to
look for a good source of instruction for learning how to set up gmail to
work with Outlook express so you don't have got bother going to the gmail
site if you don't want to. Which isn't a perfect solution, as you may set
things up this way, enjoy the convenience and familiarity, and still wish to
be able to go to the Web mail site and attend to one thing or another.

I'm not sure if this is more or less what you say a friend helped you set
up, and you're just wanting to compare details. If so, fine. If what you
really mean to ask is what they subject says or strongly implies, I.e. "how
do you open an email you receive in gmail, right there in the gmail Inbox
folder?" then I'm not able to be helpful, because I'm still having an
awkward time with that. Just to make the distinction.\

That said, go to the database called Fred's Head, which is hosted and
maintained by the American Printing House for the Blind at

http://www.aph.org/fh/index.html#content

and read the introduction so you learn about the service, if you weren't
already aware of it. Plenty of interesting and helpful stuff there. Then
find the Search link and, on the page that opens with a search function,
input the search string

gmail outlook express

in the edit box. this should get you the page where I found very clearly
written and easy to follow instructions that allowed me to set up what I
needed to set up so that my gmail account has become just another of the
accounts I can use to send and receive email directly from good old Outlook
express.

Hope this helps,
Joel

Hey Joel,

I'd like the instructions you have, because someone else helped me set up my
G-mail for Outlook Express. thanks.

Joel,
First of all, you should find some settings in your email client to
leave a copy of your messages on the server. This way, they won't
disappear from google after you check them.
In basic html view with Jaws, the messages should appear as links.
What version of Jaws are you using? If for some reason they don't,
just arrow down till you get to the subject, and hit enter. By the
way, you'll need to press enter on the subject, not the name. Also,
once you get a message open, there should be q quick reply edit box
there. If you want more options, you can always use Alt R to take you
to the reply link when in basic html. You can also press Alt C for
compose etc. I am currently replying to this message using Gmail's
web interface.
