Nonvisual Skills Instructor- Assistive Technology
Job Summary:
This position contributes to Saavi Services for the Blind mission to cultivate growth and opportunity for blind people through nonvisual skills training; gaining the knowledge that all challenges have solutions, and fostering self-efficacy, empowerment and confidence. This means that all hold a positive philosophy of blindness, and all contribute to the success for each student. This position provides non-visual instruction in individual and multistudent settings to Saavi Services for the Blind students while maintaining Structured Discovery principles. Instruction may take place both in the training center environment and in the community. Instructors must demonstrate personal competence in performing all skills taught in an authentic nonvisual manner.
Supervisor: Access Technology Manager
Location: Phoenix
Supervisory Position: No
Job Type: Exempt, Full-time
Key Responsibilities and Duties:
* Provide direct instruction in the areas of Daily Living skills, Orientation and Mobility, Braille, Access Technology, Academics, job readiness/development, and Sports and Recreation as assigned and required by program.
* Foster opportunities for confidence growth at all times
* Support non-visual skills development using a structured discovery approach.
* Facilitate guidelines and activities set by SAAVI
* Be aware of your assigned students at all times
* Provide regular written reports documenting training
* Communicate regularly with Team regarding student progress and concerns.
* Support student learning through incorporating braille, technology, cane travel and ILS, in all settings throughout all Saavi activities and practices.
* Facilitate students' development of age-appropriate social skills through recreational activities on and off campus.
* Assist students in traveling to and participating in activities in the community.
* Reinforce proper cane technique and other nonvisual skills during all activities.
* Serve as a role model for students in the use of nonvisual techniques and problem-solving skills.
* Demonstrate respect and inclusion for all
* Adhere to all timelines or develop reasonable alternate plans for accomplishing job tasks.
* Ensure learning shade and cane is used at all times while taking part in Saavi Services for the Blind and other appropriate activities.
* positively represent Saavi Services for the Blind at professional development and special functions as needed.
* Other duties as assigned
Professional Specialization: Access Technology
Job Functions:
* Provide one-on-one and small group instruction in the use of industry standard computer applications in conjunction with access technology. Focus includes speech output, low vision, Braille output, or a combination of techniques
* Facilitate worksite evaluation/modification, community workshops and community and home based training
* Develop and ensure ongoing structure and competencies for the Access Technology component of rehabilitation
* Coordinate and facilitate the recommendations and maintenance of equipment and software provided to vocational rehabilitation clients
* Provide assistance in positive philosophy of blindness
* Attends disability and employment related meetings/groups
* Builds and maintain positive relationships with community employers
* Creates case notes for each student contact and completes monthly reports as required
Competencies:
* Associates Degree in Education, Social Work, or Computer-related field
* Five years' experience using a combination of Access Technology in a work or academic setting
* Proficient and experienced in industry standard Access Technology including but not limited to: screen reading, magnification, OCR, note taking/PDA applications
* Two years' experience teaching Access Technology to adults
* Strong ability to trouble shoot and makes basic and intermediate computer and access technology repairs
* Agency training in Structure Discovery instruction
Skills and Knowledge:
* Possess a current Certification from the National Blindness professional, Certification Board, or
* Certification from the Academy Certification Vision rehabilitation and Education Professionals board, ACVREP, or
* Possess a post-secondary degree in Orientation and Mobility, Rehabilitation Teaching, Teacher of Blind students, or Teacher of the Visually Impaired, or Counseling/Social work, or another related field, or
* 3 or more years' experience providing skills training to blind individuals using Structured Discovery methodology.
* Ability to demonstrate a positive philosophy of blindness and a history of inclusive practices.
* Excellent verbal communication and the ability to demonstrate emotional intelligence,
* Experience advocating for individuals and encouraging self-advocacy
* Strong negotiation and relationship building skills
* Ability to communicate, promote and work within a team environment
* Ability to initiate and complete job duties with strong problem solving and critical thinking skills
* Good organizational skills
Conditions of Employment:
* Able to work evenings and weekends as needed
* Must demonstrate a positive philosophy of blindness
* Must complete internal blindness emersion training
* Ability to pass a Rehabilitation Services Administration (RSA) background check
* Ability to obtain an approved DPS Fingerprint Clearance Card (provided by SAAVI)
* If performing driving functions for Saavi Services for the Blind, Possess a valid Arizona Driver's License. If driving SAAVI vehicles must have a clean driving record and be approved by SAAVI insurance
