The Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind (AIDB) is the world's most comprehensive education, rehabilitation and service program serving individuals of all ages who are deaf, blind, deafblind and multi-disabled and their families. Founded in 1858, AIDB serves more than 30,000 infants, toddlers, children, adults and seniors with hearing and vision loss throughout Alabama each year.

Our services literally span a lifetime including five campuses in Talladega, a statewide network of regional centers with programs that range from early and senior intervention, traditional and nontraditional education services in residential and outreach settings and a manufacturing facility that is the state's largest employer of adults who are blind and deaf.



ABOUT THE ROLE:

This position provides an opportunity for the successful candidate to join an organization whose mission is eliminate barriers to a fulfilling life caused by blindness and visual impairment. The Director will be expected to leverage AIDB's brand and its full arsenal of international, national, and local resources in making a direct impact on improving the lives of those living with blindness or a visual impairment.

The Director will interact with a talented, passionate, and a personally vested team of staff and volunteers, providing life enriching, best-in-class services to individuals served by the AIRCB.



BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Degree in Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) from an accredited American Library Association graduate program

Must have three (3) years of library experience

Must possess advanced skills in MS Office, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.



POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  *   Serve as Ex Officio Trustee of the American Printing House for the Blind and attend annual conference in Louisville, KY
  *   Must complete a Foundations of Visual Impairment e-Learning course within the first
  *   eighteen (18) months of employment
  *   Knowledge of or willingness to learn braille, including becoming a National Library of Congress certified Braille Transcriptionist within the first thirty (30) months of employment
  *   Must complete Orientation and Mobility Training within the first twelve 12 months of employment
  *   Oversee daily management and efficient operation of the AIRCB to include the Alabama School for the Blind Library and the Subregional Library for the Blind and Print Disabled
  *   Stay abreast of all new assistive technology commercially and from the American Printing House for the Blind that benefits students with vision, physical and learning disabilities
  *   Provide leadership and vision to achieve department goals and objectives
  *   Lead a comprehensive assessment of current library service programs and create a strategic plan to advance all programs and related information/literacy services for the digital age, ensuring they reflect current best practices
  *   Lead, inspire, and further develop a highly skilled library staff
  *   Provide general management for the department, including hiring, training, evaluating staff performance, maximizing productivity, promoting teamwork, developing staff, and handling corrective issues
  *   Ensure high quality and quantity of library materials in a variety of formats to meet the needs of blind and visually impaired students and patrons
  *   Oversee department operating expense budget with accountability and accuracy
  *   Represent the AIRCB at national, state and local conferences, workshops, and seminars, as well as a local chapters of the blind
  *   Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other AIDB departments, regional centers, special education coordinators, teachers of the visually impaired as well as other stakeholders
  *   Other related duties and responsibilities as assigned


  *   Upon offer of employment, the ABI/FBI record check must be completed based on the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 pursuant to Act 2002-457. A non-refundable fee of $48.15 is required at the scheduled appointment.

SALARY: $50,785- $87,812  Scale A1   Rank 04
                        (260 Days)
Direct deposit is required. Monthly Payroll
This is an exempt position, and is not subject to overtime or compensatory provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
