Career Opportunity



Reporting to the Interim Chief Marketing Officer, the Senior Manager,
Public Relations will lead and oversee public and media relations for AFB.
Drive awareness and lead media outreach, thought leadership, and public
relations work, write AFB’s most visible content, and contribute to the
development and execution of a cohesive long- term strategy for AFB’s
communications in line with brand, mission, and programming.

 This is a full-time, remote position
Duties and Responsibilities

1.        Partner with staff across the organization to devise plans to
reach strategic communications goals for key programs and events –
including advocacy and research initiatives, employment programs, awards
events, and more. Facilitate campaigns, produce content, and manage
impact/metrics.

2.        Draft news releases, pitches, talking points and remarks, contact
lists, and relevant social content. Also create byline communications such
as op-eds and talking points for thought leadership.

3.        Monitor AFB, blindness/disability field, and competitor news and
develop creative ways to insert AFB into conversations through compelling
thought leadership. Foster relationships with media/influencers/bloggers to
reach new and existing audiences that report on key issues related to AFB’s
work.

4.        Maintain the AFB.org press room. Ensure it includes all recent
press releases, relevant blog posts, news stories, and “speakers bureau”
including current staff bios and contact information.  Measure analytics
and impact of all initiatives and provide a weekly AFB media dashboard.

5.        Lead and manage the Annual Report and the Focus on AFB Newsletter
initiatives. Manage production, including budget, design, theme, artwork,
content, and print and accessible media production, offline & online.
Serve as primary liaison to writer, copyeditor, designer, printer, and
vendors.

6.        Initiate, engage and respond to all media queries in a timely
manner, providing appropriate written responses or arranging interviews
with key staff/leadership.

7.        Oversee AFB spokesperson training and crisis communications plan.
Review the plan quarterly to ensure it is up-to-date, train spokespeople on
messaging, and help to identify and mitigate potential crises by closely
monitoring media stories about AFB and alerting senior leadership of any
potential issues.

8.        Work closely with relevant MarCom team members to ensure AFB
marketing and communications priorities are accurately represented and
aligned in all messaging.

9.        Track and measure PR efforts and outreach, content and digital
campaign strategy across the web, social media, and email platforms,
analyzing data generated from all relevant platforms to shift focus as
needed to increase/improve public perception and visibility.

10.      Serve as co-host and producer of Inform & Connect, AFB’s in-house
podcast; and host for virtual town halls, leading Q&A with AFB researchers
to discuss and expand on research reports.

11.      Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.
Qualifications

   1. Bachelor’s degree in relevant subject area plus a minimum of 6-8
   years of experience in communications (or the equivalent combination of
   education and work experience).
   2. Passion for ideas of innovative solutions to 21st century problems;
   enthusiasm around impact-driven advocacy.
   3. Ability to communicate articulately and creatively, to simplify
   complex issues to engage various segments of audience to support issues and
   initiatives.
   4. Strong writing, presentation, and communication skills, with ability
   to pick up a voice and extend it across a variety of platforms.
   5. Experience developing digital advocacy products and managing multiple
   platforms, implementing and measuring communication and engagement
   plans/strategies.
   6. Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, including the
   ability to clearly and comfortably interact with diverse public contacts
   and ‘client’ relationships.
   7. Ability to work well independently and under pressure, ability to
   solve issues, make recommendations, and shepherd initiatives across the
   finish line with measurable results.
   8. Ability to work seamlessly within a highly matrixed environment and
   build collaborative relationships across departments and functions.
   9. Fluent with communication technologies and best practices, such as
   blogging platforms, Trello/Asana, Reddit, Google Suites, MS Suites,
   MuckRack, Cision. Familiarity with social media platforms and management
   tools (including Hootsuite).
   10. Knowledge and application of current and evolving trends in digital
   advocacy and communications, particularly with advocacy and thought
   leadership campaigns.
