About the Indiana State Library:
The Indiana State Library and Historical Bureau is a public library building, located in Indianapolis, Indiana. It is the largest public library in the state of Indiana, housing over 60,000 manuscripts. Established in 1934, the library has gathered a large collection of books on a vast variety of topics.
Salary:
The salary for this position traditionally starts at $59,800.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.
Role Overview:
This position supervises all aspects of the Talking Books and Braille collection area. In addition, the incumbent performs independently at the senior specialist level in the Indiana State Library providing an advanced level of technical expertise and research/information retrieval expertise in such specialized areas of residents of Indiana who cannot use standard printed materials due to a visual or physical disability.
Introduction:
As the Library Supervisor, you will be responsible for serving in a leadership role in the Indiana State Library by providing an advanced level of technical expertise and research/informational retrieval expertise in such specialized areas of information science as federal, state, and local documents, census data, bibliographic control, material processing, Indiana history, genealogy and reference/research queries in broad subject fields of knowledge in all types of formats. In this position, you will be an ambassador for the State Library connecting the resources throughout the state and staying abreast of national and international trends in library science.
About the Job:
Develop and implement library services for print-impaired Indiana residents.
Provide training and oversight of the daily operations and staff of the Indiana Talking Book and Braille Library.
Responsible for staying up-to-date with the cataloging of new titles.
Act as a liaison to the National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled, ensuring the library is following the policies and guidelines established by NLS.
Serve as the primary administrator for the library's ILS. Work with IT to provide tech support as needed for staff, schedule updates, provide training to staff, load stats into the database, perform an annual audit of patron accounts, and do database clean-up as needed.
Compile monthly, quarterly, and yearly statistics for library stakeholders.
Provide direct service to patrons of the library by answering reference questions, performing reader advisory, and assisting with circulation as needed.
Serve as an assistive technology expert for the Talking Book department, staying up to date on new technologies and trends. Create instructional material for patrons based on the type of assistive technology materials they are using. Serve as a resource for staff and patrons as NLS looks to introduce a refreshable braille device as part of its supplied equipment.
Help organize and carry out outreach around the state; work with local organizations to promote the service to eligible users.
Write and edit a quarterly newsletter sent to all Talking Book patrons.
Help with library circulation and other duties as needed.
Act as liaison with related groups and organizations concerning library service for people with print disabilities.
Provide reference and referral services to patrons, staff, libraries, schools, and the general public.
Oversee the Indiana Voices program, which records Indiana-related books and magazines for Talking Books patrons.
Assist Librarian 1 with the biennial Vision Expo, one of the largest vision conferences in the mid-western United States.
A Day in the Life:
The essential functions of this role are as follows:
Supervise the day-to-day operations of the program area, including, but not limited to scheduling, and workflow issues, and communicate both with staff and administration.
Provide immediate supervision to employees and hold responsibility for the hiring, training, and performance evaluation process for the team.
Provide reference services to researchers and oversee and review reference services provided by staff.
Provide leadership to programs and plans including developing and managing budgets, grants, expenditures, etc.
Responsible for collection development following administration's guidelines for ordering materials and staying within a set budget. Establish policies and procedures for division staff for reviewing and selecting materials for the collection.
Provide consultant services, workshops, tours, and continuing education, and ensure staff also does the same.
Act as liaison with federal and state programs and their officials on Library Management.
Develop informational resources, policies, and procedures.
Offer support to other librarians with difficult reference questions, suggesting alternative sources, other organizations, or informational tools used to answer questions.
Recruit, select, onboard, and train employees to ensure role responsibilities and expectations are clearly understood while providing opportunities to continue professional development.
Set expectations, measure progress, provide ongoing feedback, and evaluate the performance of employees. Ensure work adheres to quality standards, deadlines, and proper procedures.

What We're Looking For:
Knowledgeable in the specialized area of library services to people with disabilities
Background in automated circulation systems
Ability to travel statewide and nationally on occasion
Possess strong computer skills in Microsoft office software, library data systems, and the ability to stay knowledgeable about changing technologies
Must be able to communicate knowledgeably on technology-related issues to patrons with a wide range of technology experience; troubleshooting issues related to downloading, unzipping files, transferring files to flash drive, mobile apps, etc.
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Enthusiasm and interest in promoting library services for readers with disabilities.
Ability to meet established work deadlines.
Demonstrated ability to meet and interact with diverse groups of people
Ability to work minimal weekend hours
What You'll Need for Success:
This person must have the following requirements to be considered for employment:
Master of Library Science (MLS) degree from an accredited institution plus three (3) years of full-time professional experience as a Librarian.
Indiana Public Librarian Certification 1 or 2 required.
Broad knowledge of the use of electronic information databases.
Advanced knowledge of fiscal management like budgets, grants, expenditures, etc.
Advanced knowledge and awareness of State Library collection development policies and knowledge of procedures and general policies of the library.
Ability to assess reference materials in all formats.
Ability to provide training and education to users and staff of the library in recent information and technological advances in the library field.
Ability to delegate work, set clear direction, and manage workflow.
Ability to effectively give feedback, provide guidance or corrective action, coach, and develop employee skillsets.
Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:
You will have 5 direct reports.
