Seeking Blind & Low Vision Participants for a Paid Research Study with Northwestern University




Dear Carroll Center Community,

Researchers at Northwestern University are recruiting participants for a paid research study. The purpose of this study is to understand how people who are blind or low vision learn to use new software-based tools. This may include, but is not limited to, learning to use document preparation tools (e.g., Microsoft Office and Google Docs), communication software (e.g., Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Slack), and more. Researchers want to know about the learning materials (e.g., audio/video tutorials, written guides, online/in-person courses) or strategies participants use for learning software-based tools.

To be eligible, participants must:

*	Be blind or have low vision
*	Be age 18 or older
*	Speak English
*	Be familiar with using macOS and VoiceOver on the Mac
*	Live in or near Boston, Massachusetts

Based on the questionnaire responses, selected eligible individuals will be invited to participate in an audio and screen-recorded study. The study will take place in-person at either The Carroll Center for the Blind in Newton, MA, or a research lab at the Northeastern University campus in Boston, MA. 

This technology testing session will last no longer than 120 minutes and take place in either April or May 2024. All invited participants who attend and complete the technology testing session will each receive $100. This compensation will be provided to participants in cash by the lead researcher at the end of each participant’s session.

Researchers will ask participants questions about their current practices for learning to use software tools. Researchers will also ask participants to participate in a series of activities on a computer where they will use learning materials (e.g., tutorials or user guides) to become familiar with new software-based tasks.
