National Deaf History Month is March 13th to April 15th of every year. This
is so the observance can span three important days in Deaf history.

The first day of National Deaf History Month, March 13th, marks the success
of the 1988 Deaf President Now movement at Gallaudet University. Though the
university was established in 1864, Gallaudet had never had a Deaf
president.

On March 6, 1988, the university announced its decision to appoint a
hearing president even though there were many qualified Deaf candidates. In
response, students protested until March 13, when the university agreed to
appoint I. King Jordan as university president, Gallaudet’s first Deaf
president.

The second key date of National Deaf History Month is April 8. On April 8th,
1864, President Abraham Lincoln signed the charter for Gallaudet
University, the first university in the world dedicated to educating
individuals who are Deaf and hard-of-hearing.

In 1856, Amos Kendall donated two acres of his estate in Washington, D.C.
to establish a school for 12 deaf and six blind students. Later, Edward
Miner Gallaudet, the son of the founder of the first school for deaf
students, became the superintendent of the school. In 1864, Congress
approved the school to become a university, and President Lincoln signed
the bill into law.

April 15, the final day of National Deaf History Month, marks the opening
of the first permanent public school for the deaf. In 1817, Yale graduate
Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet met Dr. Mason Fitch Cogswell, who had a daughter
who was deaf. While learning how to educate Deaf children, Gallaudet
enlisted Laurent Clerc, a Deaf teacher in Paris, to help him establish a
school for the deaf and hard-of-hearing in the United States.

Through this cooperation, the American School for the Deaf opened its doors
on April 15, 1817.
