[Mdpobc] TVI needed in Garrett County

All,

I appreciate all the discussion so far on this topic. It brings to light the
ever-vital demand for qualified TVI's in all parts of the country. Melissa,
I agree that an obstacle here is that we do not have a recognized training
program for TVI's in Maryland. However, with enough awareness and interest,
I believe that could soon change.

On Tuesday I spoke to 2 Introduction to Special Ed classes at Towson
University about the basics of blindness and how to best accommodate a blind
student in the classroom. These students were in large part people who
wanted to go into the general education field, but might encounter a blind
student in their classroom teaching career. However, one of these classes
was at the undergrad level, meaning that it was still possible for those
students to change careers if what they heard interested them. Both
professors were very interested in the blindness field and were curious
about current challenges facing our education. When I pointed out that we
currently suffer from a shortage of TVI's, however, both the professors and
students were surprised. Most of the students, it seems, didn't even know
that the career even existed. I don't know whether any of these students
will become interested in making a career for themselves in the blindness
education field. However, awareness is the first step.

This experience along with others shows me that our problem does not lie in
a lack of interest. Rather, it lies in a lack of awareness. Currently I know
many high school and college students who are still deciding what to do with
their lives. This provides us with a perfect opportunity to educate them
about this rewarding and in-demand career which many of them don't even know
exists. Therefore, I think it would be a good idea for us to take this
message to the colleges and high schools. Many high schools, for instance,
have career days in which they invite speakers from a variety of fields to
present to students about their chosen career paths. Could we not recruit
TVI's to participate in these? My experience at Towson shows me that college
professors are often looking for similar speakers to provide real-world
experience to supplement the learning which is occurring in the classroom.
We could get in there as well. I don't know whether this should be an
official initiative of the NFBMD or the MDPOBC or even the NFB as a national
organization. However, I think there is a need and an opportunity to fill
it--or, at least, to educate those who could potentially fill it. Just my
thoughts.

Great idea! I think one problem we have in MD is we don't have a training
program for TVIs in the state. We're working to change that, so I hope it
won't remain an obstacle forever!
I'll definitely put the word out at National Convention that Maryland has
several openings for good qualified folks!

I'm a TVI in Fairfax Co VA. My main student is a bright 3rd grader. She
loves to make presentations to younger classes about braille, her cane &
tools she uses. She's done 7 Kdg-2nd classes this year, plus her own class.
I try to put in plugs for becoming a braille teacher, so maybe a few will
remember that!

I'm too old to consider this, but sure wish there was a stronger
recruitment effort to get more teachers moving into this field. Case load
and itinerant status have to be a real turn off.

If i was looking for a new career I think I know
what in would be looking into. We should all be talking to every college age
student we know and tell them about the career of TVI. They should have no
problem finding a job.
