[MusicTlk] MusicTlk Digest, Vol 162, Issue 2

I've been principal trumpet in the Allegany symphony orchestra for 13 years.
Most community orchestras use arrangements by either j.w. pepper or warner
brothers. Youtube can also be your friend as well for arrangements not
available from j.w.pepper. In fact in 2005 when I joined the symphony up
here, I literally joined the symphony 3 days before our Christmas concert
and didn't miss a beat. As far as bands go, I played in Miami's concert
band in lieu of their marching band since if we marched we sort of did it as
an afterthought. Nowadays, people are trained to march from a young age.
Concert band might be an option.

Hi all, so I?m thinking about starting school in August. My question is is
there more than just one band for for colleges. I know they have a marching
band, but it would be hard to March and play the flute and use my dog at the
same time LOL. I was wondering if they had like a concert band or Psymbionic
been as well as a marching band in most colleges.

There have been blind persons in marching bands,
in the past. Search the Braille Monitor for
articles. I also think the Ohio State School for
the Blind had marchers at one time -- if memory is serving me correctly.

I'm sure most colleges have a concert band, and even a symphonic
orchestra.

I marched in my high school marching band and have some tips on how to do it
if you decide to go that route. However, there are bands for beginning flute
players and any instrument players in college well you don?t need to March.
There are also flute choir?s as well. I beginners I mean people that are
majoring in music performance or the performance of their particular
instrument.

Did you march with the dog? I?m curious of how to march with the dog and
play piccolo at the same time LOL. I probably will start in a beginners blue
band.

Hey Rachel. Are you looking for something to write song lyrics in, or song
ideas. Because I have no idea on how to write song lyrics for an iPhone app,
unless you want to use the notes app that came with your iPhone. But if
you?re looking to write song ideas, and cord structures, if you?re on the
keyboard, then maybe music memos may help you. If you would like more
information on Music Memos, please let me know. Or, just go to the App
Store, and search for Music Memos. It?s highly recommended. Although, the
trimming of the song idea is not very accessible, the other stuff is though.

If you're just writing lyrics with no m'usic notation or sound, a
text editor/word processor like MS Word, Notes, or the like will
do you well.

Frankly marching with a dog or cane will not work because you need both
hands. I was in my high school marching band as well and can give you some
tips as well.

Good call. But if I?m doing a song, and I have to keep looking back at the
notes app, how do I do that, and then go to GarageBand and read and I lyrics
that way. I do have garage band set to run in the background, but can I
still look at my notes while singing the song? I don?t have a braille
display, so I honestly do have to use voice over while recording my son.
Song.

I am looking for something that can actually write music notation. I found
an app called Notion which does that, but it is not very accessible with
voiceover.

I do have such software for my computer, but I have not yet installed it on
my new computer, and it will need to be upgraded before I can use it
properly? So I was hoping to find an app that I could use in the meantime.

No I did not March with my dog. The way I did the parades is I marched and
somebody on the left made a clicking sound when we were playing so that I
could listen in line up with them. Then we are playing I tried to line up as
best I could. I didn?t march in the field shows because I couldn?t think of
a way to do it so I stood and played with the pit. Later after high school I
found out that plenty of blind people have found ways of marching in the
field show. I think what they have often done is tried fishing line around
their waist and around the waist of the two people on either side they would
be near and if the fishing line tension was Todd they knew they were the
right place.

Here?s a little advice. Try searching for the Ohio State school for the
blind marking band. Maybe this might help you. Do that search term on
YouTube, or Google. Not marking band. Marching band. Although, dictation
does seem to get it right after I get done listening to it.

It sounds like the notes app maybe the best thing then. I haven?t had
experimentation with no notation either. But I think notes is probably the
best way to go. But like I said, how am I to go to my lyrics, and then
Sing-a-Song as I look back at my notes. Since I don?t have a braille
display, this is an easier that thought. And I still haven?t thought of any
lyrics yet. The song I?m working on is called, ?ice cream memories.?

Some colleges offer things like wind ensembles, jazz band(s), opportunities
for smaller group work, string orchestra, and more. Hope this helps; look
on the web pages of the music department of the colleges you are applying to

for details or call the office of the music department and they can fill you

in on all the opportunities available to you.

Hi all, so I?m thinking about starting school in August. My question is is

Hi all! On another thread we are talking about how blind people are able to
participate in school bands. I thought I would make this a little more
specific and ask those of you who is been in marching band how did you do it
as a blind person? Here?s what I did in case anyone missed it in a previous
message. When it came to marching in the parade, I had someone who happens
to be on my left although I think either E or woodwork make a clicking sound
when we are marching so I could keep up with the band and then when we
played I listened to where everybody was. I don?t think I was perfectly in
line but it worked all right. When it came to performing in the field shows,
I played with the pit. I found out later that there have been lying to
people who marched in the field shows. Apparently what some people have done
is to tie fishing line on their waist and on the ways of the people on
either side of them. When the fishing line is taught they know they?re in
the right position. I also think this would probably work when marching in a
parade. I heard of one blind drummer who had a guy walk behind him and the
guide with just got him by his shoulders since obviously you can?t go cited
guide when trying to plan instrument. I?m very curious to know what other
tips people have used.

I somehow managed to almost always stay in a straight line with everyone. I
think it was the fact that the high school I was at was one of the top ten
in the state, top four when I graduated, and they expected everyone to do
their best. I know occasionaly someone would have to let me know that I was
getting out of a straight line during mardi gras parages, but it became
quite obvious since I was a trombone player, and I knew that I had just
enough room to get to 6th and 7th positions if I staid where I was supposed
to. Plus the way the crowds are here in Slidell, the way we carried the
trombones, I basically had the end of the slide just about in the back of
the person in front of me. For field performances, it was memorization and
a lot of it. I would have another band member help me find where I was
supposed to go during practices, but that was about it. I only messed up
slightly once during the Louisiana Showcase of Marching bands senior year,
but I have a feeling that the judges just happened to be looking elsewhere
at that moment because it happened right on the 50 yard line right behind
the line for the sideline. As my band director had pointed out, and he was
right about, you cannot hear much of anyone else during a field performance,
and I did have a scary moment back in 2002 at Showcase where my vision
decided to go out completely right in the middle of the performance. What
saved me was that the wind was coming out of the North, and that actually
gave me the reference point to which direction I was going and where I
should be going.

I finally decided to join or try to join the Northshore Community Orestra,
and so far I am being told No I cannot join because you cannot see the music
and we do not have anyone good enough to record it for you so that you can
learn it. Joke is on the person I am e-mailing who is incharge because the
director of it happens to be the former band director of one of the schools
I went to. If she is smart, she will figure out a solution, if not, plan B,
which I have not figured out yet.

That?s a fear I have about going to school. The teachers being afraid of
having a blind person in the band.

I'm sorry to hear that. Learn the orchestra parts
what ever way's best for you, and just play without a stand.
Simple.
