Hello Ned, Thank you for asking and apologizes for a long reply. I hope I
can answer your questions along with possible others the forum might have.

For converting PDF into XML, try SmartScore.

There are earlier productions of No-C-Notes audio music description for
organ sheet music that was done by verbal reading, not with using my
current software that produces the reading. I have not offered these
earlier editions for sale or loan as I would have to update their audio
file format to use with today’s digital playback devices. I started
No-C-Notes over thirty years ago in the four track two speed audio cassette
days. The organ audio described scores are just like the piano score ones,
but with organ music playback sounds and keyboard tones with rhythm, pedal
and markings read. If you would like a free example, please send me a
score through my website.

There is a request form on the No-C-Notes page that you can submit with a
pdf of the music to receive a quote and time estimate. The form is at:
https://www.xinamusic.com/no-c-notes/no-c-notes-transcription-request/
Otherwise, I could take your musescore, smart score or finale file and
convert it to give you an estimate.

I am restricted in what I can offer you beyond your request and here is why.

What I offer now and what will be offered in the future will be quite
different as I seek a nonprofit agency servicing the blind to provide
No-C-Notes. Or I finally just become one myself as I don’t make money at
this anyway, HA! HA! I am discussing this with a couple of agencies to be
in compliance with the Chaffey Copyright Amendment. This section of the
copyright law states you have to be a nonprofit agency servicing the blind,
and maintaining confirmation of the disability of your consumers, to be
able to produce and give or sell a copyright piece of music as an alternate
format. I am only able to do it on a transcription for a musician service
or within a teaching situation of the one, but I cannot offer it to another
in any format even if that person is blind. Or the artist publisher gives
me permission.

An example is, I personally have several copyright songs and arrangements.
You could not produce and give or sell it in another format such as audio
described or xml or another language for anyone – doesn’t matter blind or
not – without first securing my permission, unless you are that nonprofit
blind servicing agency. There is no ADA in the Chaffey Copyright Amendment.
I have several attorneys advising me of this, but if there is another
attorney out there that would tell me otherwise, I would immediately put
everything I have out on my website and much much more!

I am a therapeutic musician with a visual disability and find print
copyright restrictions and availability such as this frustrating in United
States. The book The Untold Story of the Talking Book by Matthew Rubery
emulates the struggles of those with visual disabilities in accessing
multiple methods by our government that has only one type of sheet music
method. NLS will not offer No-C-Notes for these reasons: “We believe the
presentation of the music would not engage our patrons. While converting
books to audio appears to be a helpful aid for those who cannot read music,
we have found that it is difficult to convey text book instruction in the
audio format as successfully as it is conveyed directly from print into
braille and large print.”

My No-C-Notes thirty years of experience and referrals I have not found
that to be true. England and the Netherlands have government agencies
supporting and providing audio music score. Maybe I’ll declare myself my
own county and government…..just kidding.
Thanks for the soap box and I welcome any reasonable level-headed feedback,

Christina Cotruvo
