[nabs-l] new york advice on apartments

Hi Keri,

When does school start? You probably have several months to find an
apartment so don't worry too much. Also, plenty of landlords and potential
roommates aren't going to care that you're blind. With landlords, what they
really care about is getting the rent paid on time. With roommates, if you
decide to go that route (which may not be a bad idea, considering costs of
NYC living) it can be a little awkward at first but plenty of blind
students I know (myself included) have shared apartments with roommates and
had great experiences. Of course, there are always the bad apples and if
you come across that, just keep looking.

Another idea might be to check with the school. Many schools have resources
on off-campus housing, boards where people post about apartments or sublets
or other rental options. If your school doesn't have dorms, there's an even
greater chance that they do have some off-campus housing resources. Another
place to check is http://www.places4students.com/ - there you will find
postings specifically geared towards students and that might feel more
trustworthy than craigslist.

But at the same time, don't discount craigslist - it's definitely an option
to investigate. Also, I don't know if NYC has this but I know here in
Portland we have something called Housing Connections which has listings of
low-cost apartments. A lot of them accept section 8 but don't require it.
Most of them simply require proof that your income is below a certain
amount. So maybe look into whether NYC has something like that.

Also, if you are on any NYC area mailing lists or groups, NFB or otherwise,
or part of a student group for your school like a facebook page for new
students or something, these might be places to post that you're looking
for housing and people might be able to give suggestions of good buildings
or companies or warn you about the ones that aren't good. The more you put
the question out there and let people know what you're looking for, the
more likely it will be that something will come your way.

Good luck! I love NYC and I hope this is the start to a great college
experience there!

Chrys
