[NABS-L] Traveling along to Maryland

Hi Shihkha,

Yes, traveling by plane is relatively easy. I believe most (if not all) of us visually impaired people request assistance at the airport to get to the gate. Once you get there, it will be up to you whether or not you'd like to pre-board the plane (you have the option of doing so since you have a disability, but you don't have to if you don't want to). Once you arrive at your destination, the airport staff there should be able to help you get to baggage claim and then to get a cab or to the bus stop or whatever it is you're doing.

Also, be aware that the airport staff probably have more experience assisting people in wheelchairs then people with visual impairments. Therefore, they might ask you if you want to do things you may not want to do, such as  being pushed around in a wheelchair, or, when you get to the gate, they might even ask you if you want to wait in their office instead, because they claim that an adult can keep an eye on you in this instance. I'd usually just say no in these instances, and if they keep persisting, give them a good reason (state that you can walk perfectly fine or that you're perfectly capable of waiting at the gate due to past experiences of flying on the plane).

I hope this helps.

Sami
