[nagdu] a breeding question

Hi Sara and all,
Not all American Labs are hyper and not all British Labs are calm and
blocky. We're talking about "bench" Labs and "Field" Labs. Bench Labs are
what you see at Westminster and other AKC dog shows. They are all blocky -
what many call English Labs. Field Labs are a taller and finer boned
animal. They are very hyper because they are bred for the field and water
to fetch the downed birds.

When you look at ads in the dog magazines for Lab kennels, you see
"Confirmation" or "bench" Labs or you have kennels that specialize in the
"field" Labs for the hunting community. But both can be either English or
American Labs.

I think most of the guide dog schools use a combining of the confirmation
and field genetics to produce a Lab that will be a good guide. The ones for
guideing need to be calm enough to do fine with the amount of lying around
they have to do as we work. They also have to have enough energy to be
ready to go when we need them and to have the endurance to fit into our busy
lives.

HTH (grin!)

Linda and Landon
