What a great analogy. 

The opposite often occurs too. You ask someone to pass you the salt and they
then think you need your food cut for you. To avoid that, we avoid asking
for vital bits of info that might make the big picture a little more clear. 

I agree with the general thread that you should not feel badly though when
refusing help and that you can do so politely but firmly.
