Marion and All,
I completely agree with you Marion. I am a totally blind College student,
and I used a cane up until June of last year when Sunny and I were matched.
I certainly prefer traveling with my Guide Dog over my cane and I will
always be a Guide Dog user, but at the same time I do keep my cane skills up
because I know their importance. Using the cane provides independence other
than going human guide or working your Guide Dog, and I would rather use my
cane than go human guide if I am going somewhere where I feel that it is not
suitable for Sunny to accompany me. My competence with my cane assures me
that I will be able to keep my independence and confidence for those times
where my dog does not go with me, is hurt, or just needs a break.
