Here's what I think. The point of the visual aids well we're not sure if that's what the teacher/instructor said, but rather was quoted in court by someone trying to explain the dog as something visually helping the person. The dog does have sight and does use it when guiding so that is like sighted guide in a way... I SAID IN A WAY don't jump down my throat.. thank you.. Anyways I think that's is just how they were explaining it. Also um Julie and meghan I agree totally with your post. Number one she should have learned everything about the program before she went into it with her guide. I had a friend who choose CO NFB center over the others because SHE FELT I said SHE FELT not me or what I think... said that the training eventually included guide training after awhile. Afterall isn't cane travel with a cane? Like I said before I'm sure something could have been worked out like after her requirments were met with the cane then she could do lessons with the dog and switch back and forth. As far as the not working the dog. I did a training center in WI here (unfortunatly not NFB related) but they did the same thing, I kept my dog in a room for short trip and long trips I either kept him heeling or at my apartment. I did work him when not in the cane travel lessons. It's up to us to work our dogs even the friend at the CO NFB center worked her dog in her spare time after class, or took a different route home to give the dog more exercise. Oh geez what were other peopel saying... OH I do think that people depend way too much on they're dogs. I've seen people who won't even go do anything without them, work them until the day they go to the school to get the next, take them to loud concerts, or places like the zoo where it's damaging to the other animals. I volunteered at a zoo and kept Dante in the office while I walked around and did the feedings. It would have been stupid for me to work him all around there when I'm hauling food and being around prey animals or preditors. I think the schools should also do a better job of making sure that people know they're cane skills. Dante stays home every monday afternoon because i have lab, because I am concerned for him being involved in a haszard, they're are accidents all the time and the last thing I need is my dog getting injured. Scary story I do know someone who took their dog to lab and a test tube dropped and the dog got glass in it's paws and of'course licked it. NOT GOOD ENDING. SO I'm not saying particular people on the list but I have notice some people over over over using their dogs. OH the last thing was that I nor anyone on this list was there. We don't know what was said. Maybe it was a simple, you need to heel your dog or leave him in the room while we work on your cane travel. I'm sure it wasn't a you can't bring that dog in here statement.
OK I'm done rambling,
Sarah and Dante
