[nagdu] question

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Seeing Eye used to have a
requirement that a person getting had to work (presumably outside the
home) and that they had to get to work without using sighted assistance?

Contrast this with today, where most people need sighted assistance by
virtue of not living within a walkable distance to their jobs.
I wonder what Moris Frank would have thought about that.
I also wonder if Moris's guides were true loosers, or if he made more of
it due to his need (and it is a good need0 to promote the Seeing Eye?
Seeing Eye was his business after all.
I bring it up only because I've had to hire drivers. Most are good, but
I have had a few duds. One was a good driver, but lacked business sense.
It matters because he tried to charge me more then our agreed upon rate,
not because he was a bad guy, he simply lacked a sense of how much it
would cost to drive both in terms of time and money.
Needless to say, I ended our arangement.
This is an interesting discussion.
And Alison, don't be afraid of old Moris's story. It is good to know
about and think about, it is not good to fear it.

Hi Allison,
I should have said more about Morris Frank (grin!). This would happen to
him before he heard about Dorthy Harris Eustis' article in the Saturday
Evening Post. In those days, blind people would just stay home. The
canes they had were the short wooden versions of a support cane. Frank
was an insurance salesman and he continued to do this after he was
blinded. To do his job he had to hire people to guide him around.
These people were usually losers who couldn't get anything else and they
were very unreliable. they'd drop him off at his destination, leave and
then forget to come back to get him.
One time he was left on the sidewalk! The guide had wanted more money
and when Frank refused him more money, the guy just left him stranded!

Read the book, "Love In The Lead: The 50 Year Miracle Of The Seeing
Eye" by Peter Putnam. It's availible on Talking Book. Walt Disney
Productions also made a movie based on the book in the 1980s. The book
origionally came out in 1979 and there was a newer version done several
years ago.

Take care,

Linda and Landon
