Dar,
Does your church have a Church Council? I'd go and talk to them calmly and
express your concerns. People tend to be "out of sight, out of mind" on
things like finding out who in the congregation can use a ride to church.
We've talked about this in Council when I was a member. We now have a
coouple of people who are being picked up for church. This is now happening
because the issue was brought to the attention of the Church Council - we
just didn't think or were aware of who wanted a ride to church.
During my over forty years of adulthood, most of the churches were not
accessible to disabled people and they didn't care to be, either. We were
not made to feel welcome so I stopped going to church. Then in 2000,after
many years of being unchurched, I found Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in San
Diego through a friend who went there. He invited several of us from the
Blind Community Center to his church and we came. We met many nice people
there and are still going there nine years now.
Sometimes we have to keep checking out church families until we find a good
fit for us. I've also gone to my boyfriend's church in Montpelier, VT when
I'm visiting. His is an Episcopalian church. It has a very diverse
congregation with everyone from wheelchair users, some visually impaired,
some gays and transgender people. Everyone there is a part of Christ's
family there and I like it. I plan to go there when I move to VT. What they
don't have is Brailled bullitins or large print ones like we have at my
current church. But, that's no problem - my boyfriend and I can do it
(grin!).
