Welcome David,
When you go for walks with your dog, have the dog on your left side.
Then as you are walking with the cane, you will notice the 
companionship of you and your dog traveling together.
With you seeing during the day, we as blind persons have to put the 
trust in a dog, where the dog and you learn how to walk up to curbs, 
cross streets by listening to traffic and on it goes.
